When car companies use a different/non-cohesive color for the headliner and pillars. A gray headliner is perfect if your interior is gray, and it's still not so bad when your interior is black. But with a tan interior? Why? Some more examples...
In Jaguar's defense, you don't have to get the caramel/navy/cream combination. But if you want that light gray interior, or tan, you are stuck with the cream colored pillars/headliner (at least on the one I spec'd out). Some brands, like BMW and Audi can do away with the 3rd color for the headliner and pillars if you are willing to pay more for a higher trim model.

Few companies give a rat's ass about headliners unfortunately. Not necessarily related your comment about the aesthetics here, but I've heard that from an engineering standpoint that's usually an area where the weaker employees get assigned.

Just a guess but I think a part of the reason is because interiors with dark headliners make them seem smaller.
The biggest factor is probably cost.

It does seem like cheaping out. Especially considering the effort they put into Luxing up the rest of the interior.

I like it that way in my truck because it adds some color to break up the black monotony.

Black with a light gray upper half is acceptable in my book. Though I would still prefer all black.

In some of the pictures above it looks good and in some it doesn't Audi is definitely an exception.

now that I think about it, I dont think i have ever been in a truely all black car. all of ours haxd lighter headliners.
no, scratch that, a couple of cabs I've been in were all black and they felt VERY claustrophobic and small, even though they were lincoln towncasrs. so I think the lighter top half is to give the car a feeling of more space./

I am ok with an enclosed space feeling...
enclosed.
I think they could argue glare as a more functional reason. But I'm sure it is co$t.

And all of mine had matching headliners lol. I guess I prefer visual consistency since I'm not fooled by the illusion of more space because of a different color.
My DD is a 1992 Grand Marquis with an all blue interior. Except for the instrument panel and fake wood trim, everything is blue. Carpet, seats, dash, doors, belts, pillars, headliner... all blue. Not mine, but same interior.

I remember my dad's 73 Torino wagon. Lime green with a green interior. Everything inside was green. Being 1973 Ford quality.....there were about 10 different shades of interior vinyl, carpet, door trim and headliner.

Cause BMW still thinks it's 2003 when ricer blue was the shit? Though it's not so bad on this interior.

Seems more like experimentation to me in some of those photos. The headliner is probably some dashboard kind of deal; dashboard have been dark because it prevents glare. I didn't know that but maybe lighter headliners have some mystical car reason too.

I don't mind having some contrasting colors, my car is tan seats/door inserts, black everything else, because I think black everything would have been too somber.
But, the colors ought to at least work together and there should probably be some rule as to how many different ones you should have in one car.

My grandparents had a Lincoln with a similar interior. I hated that car in the summer.

It makes horrid contrast with the orange dials IMO. Would delete in the options sheet.
